something wierd with changing Mail application -- Linux Only.

I've converted my Ultra 5 and my GX 110 to 9.0.4.
I am now back to vanilla login, and getting AUI.
I clicked right on the Mail icon, and changed its properties
so that the mail program is 'messages' instead of '/usr/athena.../mail-script'.
Clicking on the mail icon on the Ultra-5 brings up andrew messages
as it should and as it always has.
But nothing happens on the Linux side.
Notes: YES I can start messages from the Athena prompt both on
Linux and on the Sun.
YES I tried specifying /usr/andrew/bin/messages in case the applet was
not getting my path.
