Yes, it's supposed to do that, though it is admittedly less than optimal.
We added the .desktop_o2 directory in IRIX 6.3; the 6.3 directory contents
are incompatible with the 6.2 layout.  Since merging the two for 6.5 seems
problematic, and there could be hardware-based differences between the
two, the best thing to do seemed to be to keep the 6.3 behavior.

[The default sgi behavior is to create a per-host .desktop directory;
we make a symlink for that name, pointing at either the indy or o2
directory.]
