So, there are two separate problems here:
1. dvips is using a default resolution of 540dpi.
2. MakeTeXPK wants to write its fonts to some directory under
/common.
8.2 doesn't succeed any better on (2), so I'm not going to worry about
that too much. (We can probably convince MakeTeXPK to write to
/var/tmp, but without a per-user temp directory I'm not convinced we
can easily make things work securely.) We certainly need to fix (1),
but unfortunately I'm mystified as to how. "540" does not appear in
any interesting places in the code, so dvips is picking it based on
some calculation, and Aaron used a different source base (dvipsk) and
doesn't seem to have any local mods to deal with this problem.
