Well, I also have no idea why ~source-8.2 has elisp files dated Sep 25
1996 and ~source has files dated Nov 20 1996.

The second is definitely true; it's a bug I noted in 8.1 but never got
around to fixing for 8.2 (and I'm not too sure how I'd fix it; I guess
put in an rm after the tar in the install rule). The first is
probably true.
