Note: I typed one ctrl-D to get each of those prompts.  In other
words, this is DIFFERENT from the previous bug where a ctrl-D would
cause an infinite loop.  However, ctrl-D still doesn't do the right
thing.

What should have happened:

The first ctrl-D should cause the program to exit.
