My builds were to a local disk, and I could not reproduce the problem
with those executables.  I did try copying them to AFS to strip, also
not considering that the problem may occur when the executable is
written by ld...

There's an IRIX FAQ which mentions a problem with strip if you strip
more than one file at a time, presumably not the problem here (unless
there is some sort of bizarre timing-related issue).  I'll see if I
can find out more about this problem, as it seems the best lead so far.
The SGI patch web site didn't seem to list any relevant patches...
