If I use /etc/athena/rc.conf.old, then mkserv will promptly overwrite
it. We've been using foo.old for ages for everything else, though.

I haven't found any way to do anything about that, unfortunately. On
Solaris, you need some streams modules pushed onto the tty, and the
program that does that is ttymon, which also asks you to log in.
