FYI: Neither backing store nor 24 bit default visuals seem to be
responsible for this one.
(I ran it on two 8.1 SGI's, one both with and without the X server
changes and it always failed as described. I ran it on an 8.0 SGI
(mwhitson's, which has at least the 24-bit stuff enabled anyway) and
it worked fine.)
