Just a few notes: "/usr/ucb/ps ax" wouldn't find any processes anyway,
since it had the wrong ownership up until last night.  Keypresses will
take a minute to echo because the X server isn't doing anything else
while it beeps.  I don't know why inetd would die, though.

If you find a way of reproducing this emacs failure, please tell me; I
can't do much about it until then.

(Incidentally, turning off the X server beep prevents this kind of
failure.)
