The system is Partly-Cloudy:
Athena Server (SUN4m) Version 8.0A Wed May 15 03:41:56 1996
The program is emacs 19.30.1
Part of the problem was that I fat-fingered some key combination, and
got the following displayed in the minibuffer:
Args out of range: 1090563, 1090563
Another part of the problem was the continuous beeping (as though I
were holding down ^G, but much faster). (Ever heard a SPARC5 scream
in pain? I have now.)
The worst part of the problem was that the machine was thoroughly
hosed during the beeping. I noticed that inetd died, keypresses were
taking up to a minute to echo (though the pointer position responded
normally to mouse movement), "/usr/ucb/ps ax" didn't find any
processes. It's amazing how one application can bring a Solaris
system to its knees.
I don't know what I typed, but I was editing a text file with
emacsclient at the time.
The emacs kept the Sun hosed, kept beeping, and kept the "Args out of
range" error displayed, all until I sent the emacs a SIGHUP, which
killed it.
