One way of working around the /etc/cap.printers problem is to store the
file elsewhere (not on the root, such as /var) and to create a symbolic
link from /etc/cap.printers to that other location. I know when I
originally did some of that update script I tried to allow for arbitrary
applications being installed, but that it would require the use of
symlinks (because I did not want cruft arbitrarily accumulating on the
root).
