hi,
I've been playing with 7.7 on both heath-bar-crunch (sun) and
mint-chocolate-chip (RS6000) all day.
This problem was with my customizations on both machines:
various things in my xterm did not work properly until i typed 'tcsh' These
included no lineedit, not being able to delete stuff, and my prompt showing
the variables and not the results, eg: "[%m:%d] Yo dude" instead of
"[mint-chocolate-chip:Fri] Yo dude" However, my prompt is supposed to say,
and does on other machines, "[heath-bar-crunch:/mit/release77] Yo dude" That
is, %d meaning 'directory', not 'day of week'
for: IBM Powerstation 320h (mint-chocolate-chip)
on log in only the console, virtual desktop and icon manager showed up
no xterms, xznol, xload or background. These all appeared after I opened an
xtterm from my menu and sourced .startup.X. However, .startup.X was run when
I first logged in because other things that are done there (attaches, checking
for mail, starting zwgc, etc.) did work. This could be a timing bug?
none of these login problems showed up when I logged in without
customizations, including the one above about needing to type tcsh i use the
vtwm window manager at this path:
/afs/athena/project/windowmanagers/$bindir/vtwm
Emacs: showed up with a different font, was this intended?
Typed: M-x version and it did not know the command
the 'backspace' key does not work, have to use the 'delete' key.
Olh (no customizations)
I typed 'olh' at my prompt and got:
athena% olh
olh: Command not found.
then /usr/athena/bin/olh showed:
olh -> /afs/athena.mit.edu/system/olh/rsaixbin/olh
^
|
however, the olh directory was not there
lineedit worked without me typing 'set lineedit'
--------------------------------------------------
on the Sun:
in olh, hitting the space bar in anything but the main window makes the
window disappear.
no manual entry for enscript, and
enscript -2r -h -Pny moira
enscript: illegal option -- P
enscript: can't open font metrics file /usr/athena/lib/ps/CourBo.afm
I hope this hasn't been too confusing, please let me know how this
information could be better organized to be more useful to you since
i will probably be using these computers quite a bit for the next couple
of weeks. Also, if you have questions about anything i've stated so far,
feel free to bug me, I have nothing better to do these days :)
