SOLARIS- AFS file append corrupts files

I've just discovered that a number of my mail archives are now
corrupted, having blocks of nulls in them. All indications are that
this has started happening since I switched to using Solaris.
I use emacs rmail, which adds messages to archives by appending to
existing files. The symptom is that the new message appended to the
end is fine, but the last couple hundred bytes of the previous
contents are changed to NULLs.
I'll try to see if I can reliably reproduce the problem, after I've
assessed the damage to my mail files.
