Date: Thu, 29 Jul 93 15:03:05 EDT From: Derek Atkins <warlord@MIT.EDU> > You might as well complain that "decmipsbin" is used for Ultrix 3 and > Ultrix 4 binaries, which are about as incompatible as SunOS and > Solaris binaries. We survived that switch. Maybe I should, but I've never used Ultrix 3, and I don't know of any machines currently running Ultrix 3 that I can log into around MIT. On the other hand, I do know of plenty of SunOS4 machine that will probably stay SunOS 4 machines until they get decommissioned... And these machines are only a year or two old! (Meaning they probably wont be decomissioned until after I get my Master's Degree!) Yes, this is a philosophical issue. And as I said in my initial mail, when things become incompatible, then you should change the name! So long as things are compatible its ok to keep the name. I would like to be able to support both SunOS4 and SunOS5 machines, because I feel that I support more than just "athena", but I can't because both resolve to "sun4bin". -derek
