Hi!
It sounds like you inadvertently selected the "Secure Keyboard" option
from the "Main Options" (control-left button) menu of xterm. This option
causes that xterm to grab keyboard focus so that no other X applications
can monitor your keystrokes while you type something secret like your
root instance password. The xterm reverses video to emphasize that this
mode is in effect. Select the "Secure Keyboard" option on that xterm
again to unsecure it.
The moderately paranoid should always use this option when typing
passwords. The truly paranoid shouldn't even go outside, and forget
even thinking about using X. ;-)
