This is a known bug, a few releases old, which noone has ever managed
to track down. Press the control key once after you see the "login:"
prompt.

This is not a bug, it's a feature. :-)

The Vaxen in console mode have a feature that every so many characters,
they pause for a keypress. Who needs "more?" It wasn't hanging; press
any key to continue.
