Yes, that's what caused it.  If Bill or Steve ever fully "deactivated"
(detached /srvd) they would have then spun up the pack from a
different server, and been fine.  As it was, they didn't detach /srvd,
I couldn't get in remotely and there was no one in the office at the
time.  

Still, I don't see why, if "deactivating and reactivating" as root
fixed the problem, the dm aut-reactivation didn't fix it earlier...
