If the kernel decides the megapel is out of order (either because it
timed out reloading microcode, or found the wrong microcode loaded), it
will not attempt to use it until a user program opens the display device
and closes it. Since you sent mail about the kernel message "not ucode
found", I assume this is what happened. Running getty on the megapel
would not have helped, because the kernel refuses to display text while
in this state.
