Good afternoon!
The FileMaker Release Team has finished preliminary testing and the
evaluation of FileMaker Pro 5.5. At this time we wish to open up testing
to the MIT community. We are looking to recruit approximately 20
volunteers to contribute on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. In
addition, we are looking for a variety of expertise, from general to expert.
What we will test:
FileMaker Pro 5.5 - the base client program, with all its features,
including database creation and use
FileMaker Server 5.5 - the database server program, which does not include
direct access to the data
FileMaker Unlimited 5.5 - identical to Pro, except the web capabilities are
expanded (access unlimited, plus
advanced features)
What we will not test:
FileMaker Developer
FileMaker Mobile
Some issues to ponder prior to volunteering:
Available time for active evaluation:
We anticipate a 2-3 hour allotment for testing, however, you are not
expected to test every area of the software.
Those wishing to test "Server" and "Unlimited" editions should currently
have experience with using these packages. Distribution will be on a
first-come first-served basis as media is limited.
Evaluation to include:
- testing the installer process, new and upgrades
- integration testing within the MIT environment
- testing the on-line help and features embedded within the application
- reviewing the draft documentation and provide feedback.
Areas of testing:
1. Installation (Base Product and Updater) (v.2 updater for Windows will be
available via url)
2. Integration with the MIT Environment
3. Basic FileMaker Features
4. New/Changed FileMaker Features (Basic)
5. New/Changed FileMaker Features (Data Exchange via ODBC)
6. New/Changed FileMaker Features (Multi-User - including Server)
7. New/Changed FileMaker Features (Web - including Unlimited)
8. Plug-Ins (esp. Security)
If you agree to assist, we will provide the following:
- the CD (must already be registered for a licensed copy; I will need to
provide your name to MIT Volume Site Licensing)
- testing instructions
- test results reporting form
- documentation
STANDARD DISCLAIMER:
While we would prefer that you conduct the test on a machine that will
receive regular use, the software you will be testing could cause
unexpected changes to your system. If you do use a production machine, you
should plan to back up before installing the software and frequently during
the testing process
If you are interested in assisting with the evaluation, please contact me
by Tuesday, February 12th, indicating which platform (Win/Mac) you will
test under, a mailing address for CD distribution your level of expertise
and desired package. Plans to initiate testing will begin on Thursday,
February 14th and continue for two weeks ending on February 28th.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or, the
FileMaker Release Team (filemaker-release@mit.edu)
Sincerely,
