IS Announces Support for Mac OS 9.2.1
-------------------------------------------------------
Beginning today, Information Systems supports Mac OS 9.2.1, having
tested the operating system with the suite of enterprise business
systems, supported desktop applications, and network software in use
at MIT.
For a look at Mac OS 9.2.1 at MIT, see
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/macos9.2.html
SAPgui-for-Java Macintosh 4.6D is not compatible
-------------------------------------------------------
This version of Mac OS is not compatible with the current supported
release of SAPgui for Java (4.6D). When you attempt to quit the
application, the system freezes and it is necessary to restart.
At this time, we request that you do *not* upgrade to MacOS 9.2.1.
If there are compelling reasons for you to upgrade, please contact
<r3-admin@mit.edu> in advance. If you have purchased or will be
purchasing a new machine and MacOS 9.2.1 is its operating system,
please contact <r3-admin@mit.edu>, as well.
What should I consider prior to upgrading my Mac OS?
-------------------------------------------------------
The Mac OS 9.2.1 update is designed to improve Classic application
compatibility in Mac OS X and deliver updated support for Macintosh
systems that are based on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor. Generally,
this update contains no visible changes, just compatibility
improvements and bug fixes.
There is no urgency to upgrade. This is something that can be done
during a regular system maintenance cycle, or during a scheduled
downtime. If your system is functioning well, you may decide not to
upgrade at all.
As with any change in system software, if your office has local
technical support, please confer with them prior to initiating any
upgrade. Also, you may find that third-party hardware and some
software applications may not work without an update. Check the
vendor web site for details.
We also recommend that you perform a full backup of your data before upgrading.
Minimum System Requirements
-------------------------------------------------------
Computer: Any Macintosh computer with a G3 or G4 processor with the
exception of the original PowerBook G3. (All PowerBook computers
that work with Mac OS 9.2.1 have a large, white Apple logo on the
outside of their display lids.)
Hard Disk: 320MB or more of free hard disk space for an easy install.
RAM: At least 32MB of RAM with virtual memory set to 64 MB.
Note: MIT recommends a minimum of 256MB RAM to support the operating
system and simultaneously run a number of the IS recommended and
supported software applications.
Obtaining
-------------------------------------------------------
There are two ways to get Mac OS 9.2.1
1) If you do not have Mac OS 9.1 already installed on your computer,
first visit http://web.mit.edu/is/products/vsls/mitmacos/ for a Mac
OS 9.1 CD. Install Mac OS 9.1 and then go to Apple's download page
at http://www.apple.com/software/.
2) If you have version 9.1 already installed on your computer, visit
http://www.apple.com/software/ to download the update.
Support
-------------------------------------------------------
For specific questions or issues regarding Mac OS 9.2.1, you can
initiate a case log for the Computing Help Desk via
http://casetracker.mit.edu/ or send e-mail to computing-help@mit.edu.
If you have questions regarding the Software Release Team, see our
web pages at http://web.mit.edu/swrt or send e-mail to the team via
swrt@mit.edu.
