-----------------------------------------------------------
Good afternoon!
Information Systems is glad to announce support for Office XP Standard for
Windows to the MIT Community.
What does XP stand for? According to Microsoft, XP stands for
"experience"-specifically, an exciting new set of experiences enabled by
this new release.
Why should I upgrade?
-----------------------------------
1. Office XP offers a nice set of new features and improvements to
features in previous versions.
2. Office XP is more robust.
3. Office 2000 is no longer available.
Compare it with the version you have:

New Features and Improvements
---------------------------------------------------------------
Several new features improve the user experience:
1. The Task Pane, a convenient side panel, provides fast access to recent
documents and frequently used formatting or other commands. The pane is
especially useful in PowerPoint, for slide thumbnails, colors, and an
animation builder.
2. Smart Tags provide contextual menus for completing a task quickly.
3. The infamous Office Assistant is hidden by default and appears only
when help is activated. Users are able to ask a question by typing into
the Office menu bar without launching the Answer Wizard or Office Assistant.
4. Single Document Interface (SDI), introduced in Windows 2000, can be
turned off, so that only one button per Office application appears on your
task bar.
For a more in depth look at the features that MIT supports, please read the
Office XP at MIT webpage: http://mit.edu/is/help/officexp/
Known issues
--------------------
Previous Office versions:
Installing Office XP will overwrite previous Office versions including
start menu items unless you are careful. Therefore, to decide which
installation type is best for you, consider the question: "Do I need to
keep older versions of Office as well as installing the new Office XP. If
you want to install and use more than one version of Office on the same
computer, you must install the earliest version first.
Product Activation:
The retail product version will not be usable for cloning due to the new
anti-piracy program from Microsoft called "activation". If people are
planning to clone machines, please acquire the appropriate volume licenses
and media through the Select Agreement. For more information on this,
see: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/mpafaq.asp

Minimum System Requirements
---------------------------------------------
Hard Disk: Approximately 300 MB available
Processor: 266 MHz (MIT recommended minimum)
RAM: 128 MB (MIT recommended minimum)
The MIT recommendations take into account an integrated desktop, meaning
multiple applications are expected to work at the same time.
Where to get Office XP Standard
----------------------------------------------------------
Office XP is available via the MS Select Agreement and as an academic
retail version from NECX. If you need assistance in determining which
version of Office XP to purchase, contact the MCC at mcc@mit.edu or
x3-7686. The retail version of Office 2000 is no longer available on the
market.
