Good Morning,

The Software Release Team is proud to announce the release of Kerberos for
Windows 2.1 (KfW).

We have been working for the past several months with members of the MIT
community and Project Pismere to test and improve the installer, revise
documentation and provide support. KfW 2.1 is the replacement for
MinK. Prior to downloading and installing KfW 2.1, please consider the
"cautions" noted in this e-mail or found in the documentation at
http://mit.edu/is/help/kfw/.

Who Should Upgrade and Why
----------------------------------------------
Anyone who does not rely on WLPR Spooler should upgrade to KfW 2.1 when
they have a convenient opportunity. While at this time there are no
applications that require this version of KfW, we will be releasing
applications that do in the near future, e.g., KLP in February and
WinZephyr in March.

Compatibility Issues
-------------------------------
WARNING! KfW 2.1 is not compatible with WLPR Spooler. If you rely on WLPR
Spooler to print to networked printers, you should NOT upgrade at this
time. We hope to release KLP, a replacement for WLPR Spooler, near the end
of February. For more information, please take a look at the on-line
documentation.

KfW 2.1 is a 32-bit application. It does not support 16-bit applications
that utilize Kerberos. If you use a Kerberized 16-bit application other
than WLPR Spooler, please contact the Computing Helpdesk for assistance at
computing-help@mit.edu.

New Features
---------------------
1. Improved in memory ticket cache.
2. Fixed various buffer overflow vulnerabilities in Kerberos 4.
3. Kerberos v5 support is from MIT Kerberos v5 Release 1.2.1.
4. Installer fixes a bug in the uninstall of mink-10-18-99.exe.
5. Includes an icon for Kdestoy.

Caution
------------
Unlike previous releases, you should not uninstall the previous version of
Kerberos for Windows (mink-10-18-99) before installing KfW 2.1. We have
modified the KfW 2.1 installer to compensate for a bug in the uninstall of
mink-10-18-99 that would revert your system path to what it was the day you
installed MinK.

Where to get KfW 2.1
---------------------------------
The installer is available via Certificate download from
http://mit.edu/software/ as Kerberos for Windows 2.1.
Please review the documentation http://mit.edu/is/help/kfw/ before installing.
If you have a question or need assistance, please contact the Computing
Helpdesk at computing-help@mit.edu or x3-1102.

Enjoy!
Jonathan
