Greetings!
On January 9, Apple began distributing an update to Mac OS 9.1 via its web
site, http://www.apple.com/software. The update is a free download, but is
also available on CD for $19.95 through a PDF order form available on the
page. The Software Release Team is pursuing producing an update CD for
the MIT community.
According to Apple this release incorporates fixes made available after
9.04, as well as provide improved support for Multiple Users. Initial
reports are that it is very stable and preliminary testing shows that it
works with the basic MIT-supported applications.
There are three important issues to be aware of when installing the 9.1
update. First, it will not work with Mac OS X public beta. Second, if you
use a Language Kit, you must have the full install CD in order to upgrade
your language kit at the same time as you are upgrading to Mac OS
9.1. Third, after upgrading you use the Apple Software Update and download
CarbonLib 1.2. Version 1.1.1 is included with 9.1 but version 1.2 is much
better. For further details on updating to 9.1, see Apple's web site at
http://www.apple.com.
Within the next few weeks, the Software Release Team will have detailed
testing results as well as more information about distribution. If you
have questions in the meantime, feel free to contact us at swrt@mit.edu.
Enjoy!
