Good afternoon!

Release Team Update
-------------------
The Mac OS X Release Team continues to work with IT Partners, Product
Release Coordinators, MIT internal support providers, and MIT
business process owners to gauge an appropriate time-line for IS
support of Mac OS X. Factors that will influence the timing of
support include the functionality of supported applications in both
native and classic modes, the availability of training for internal
support providers and end users, and the pace at which various areas
within MIT are ready to transition. The Team is exploring
documentation and training needs for Mac OS X, and would welcome your
input. Please send mail to macosx-release@mit.edu.

A draft table of test results for the suite of MIT supported
applications and additional software critical to MIT's business is
available at http://web.mit.edu/swrt/macosx/matrix.html.

Industry Transition Update
--------------------------
At the MacWORLD conference in July, Steve Jobs stated that by
September 2001, Apple would be halfway through it's own transition to
Mac OS X, and that by March 2002 the transition would be complete.
Apple has not stated specifically whether Mac OS 9 will still be
available in March, nor when Mac OS X will ship as the default
operating system.

Also at MacWORLD, Apple demonstrated its next release of Mac OS X,
version 10.1. Available in September, version 10.1 includes many
performance and compatibility enhancements. For details, see
http://www.apple.com/macosx/newversion. The release team will test
the new version for compatibility with MIT supported applications
send an announcement approximately 30 days after it is released.

On May 21, 2001, Apple began shipping Mac OS X alongside Mac OS 9.1
on all new Macintosh computers. Mac OS 9.1 is still the default
operating system, and the functionality of the system is not affected
by the presence of Mac OS X.

Several key software vendors have either released Mac OS X versions
of their applications or announced availability of new versions. For
up-to date information, see the Macintosh products guide at
http://guide.apple.com/usindex.lasso for a complete list.

Self-Support Resources
----------------------
Please note that Mac OS X is not yet supported at MIT. If you are
experimenting with Mac OS X, help is available through a user-support
mailing list, macosx-help@mit.edu. A list of useful resources is
available on the Mac OS X web pages at
http://web/swrt/macosx/#resources.

If you have questions or comments, please contact the release team at
macosx-release@mit.edu or the Software Release Team at swrt@mit.edu.
For more information on Mac OS X and the release effort, please refer
to the release notebook, at http://web.mit.edu/swrt/macosx.

Regards,

Ginny
Product Release Coordinator for Mac OS X
