Subj: Service Pack 2 Recommended for Windows 2000
----------------------------------------

Good Afternoon,

Information Systems is proud to announce support and the recommendations of
Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000.

Who Should Upgrade and Why
----------------------------------------------------------
Anyone running Windows 2000 should upgrade to Service Pack 2 to enhance the
security and stability of their operating system, unless they are running
one of the applications that have known issues mentioned below.

Known Issues and Cautions
-----------------------------------------------------------
As with any service pack or patch, we urge you to read the Readme and
Release Notes to be sure there are no issues with anything that may be
special in your area. We have had a number of people have been running SP2
since it was released in May and they have not encountered any
problems. That does not mean you will not be the first.

SP2 Readme:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp2/ReadMeSP.htm

Release Notes including a complete list of known issues from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q289/9/07.asp.

The most likely one to affect machines at MIT is the Roxio (formerly
Adaptec) Easy CD Creator 5 Blue Screen . Follow the instructions in the
knowledge base article
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q298/5/83.ASP
to prevent your system from crashing if you use Easy CD Creator 5.0.

New Features
------------------------------------------------------------
Service Pack 2 includes the high encryption pack which means that you do
not need to figure out which version is right for you.

Where to get SP2
-------------------------------------------------------------
Service Pack 2 is available from Microsoft in 4 different ways. Pick the
one that works best for you.
         1. Download the Full install
         2. Download the Express install
         3. Use Windows Update in the Start Menu
         4. Order a CD from Microsoft

More information on acquiring SP2, including links to the downloads and CD
order form, is available at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/win2000/sp.html.

Where to get Help
--------------------------------------------------------------
Support from Windows 2000 including Service Pack 2 is available from the
Computing Helpdesk.
         email: pc-help@mit.edu
         phone: x3-1102
         web: http://web.mit.edu/helpdesk/

Documentation, including the urls in this message, is available at
http://web.mit.edu/win2000/sp.html.

Enjoy!
Jonathan
