IS Releases Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows
The Software Release Team is glad to announce the release of Eudora
for Windows version 5.0.2. We have been working with members of the
MIT community to create a customized installer, test new features,
and create documentation and stock answers.
Customized Installer Released
-----------------------------
The Eudora Release Team has created an installer that delivers Eudora
version 5.0.2 for Windows customized for use within the MIT computing
environment.
At the Eudora home page http://web.mit.edu/is/help/eudora/ you will
find links for downloading the software, installation instructions,
new features, and additional documentation.
New Features
------------
QUALCOMM has added several new features and improved existing
functionality in Eudora. New features include: Eudora Sharing
Protocol, a file sharing add-on; Moodwatch, an offensive message
tagging implementation; and statistics on your e-mail usage; as well
as increased support for the IMAP messaging protocol. They have also
improved the Address Book and Signature features.
More information about new features can be found at
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/eudora/5newfeats-win.html.
For details about IMAP, including considerations and known issues, see
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/imap/.
Known Issues
------------
Installer notes:
Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows installer will upgrade only OLDER versions
of Eudora for Windows (prior to version 5.0.2) or reinstall over the
same version (5.0.2).
If you have a newer version of Eudora for Windows installed on the
target system, such as a beta version or a version higher than 5.0.2,
YOU MUST UNINSTALL THE NEWER VERSION BEFORE running this installer.
IMAP issues:
While Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows includes additional provisions for
the use of IMAP protocol for e-mail, testing has revealed that there
are still a number of bugs and known issues which prevent Eudora from
working seamlessly with MIT mail servers via IMAP.
At this time, IS does not recommend Eudora with IMAP for most users. The
following is a list of known issues:
- Lack of Hesiod support for IMAP
The Hesiod implementation in Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows currently will
not work for the "incoming mail server" setting. Therefore you will
need to enter the name of their Post Office server to use IMAP with
Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows. You can find your Post Office server name
at
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/network/eudora-config.html
- Kerberos tickets needed BEFORE opening Eudora
When using Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows with IMAP, you will need to
obtain a Kerberos ticket BEFORE opening Eudora to check your mail or
perform any other tasks on the mail server. If Eudora is already
open, you will need to close Eudora, obtain a Kerberos ticket using
Leash32, and then re-open Eudora to check your mail.
- Hibernating in Windows 2000 requires re-opening Eudora
When using Eudora v5.0.2 for Windows with IMAP on a Windows 2000
(typically portable) computer, when you resume use of the computer
after hibernation, Eudora is often unable to check mail. Sometimes
the issue is resolved by closing and re-opening Eudora. If this does
not work, you will need to restart the computer in order to be able
to check your e-mail using IMAP.

Windows, please consult
