IS Releases Dreamweaver 4.01 for Macintosh and Windows
---------------------------------------------------------
The Software Release Team is pleased to announce the availability of
Dreamweaver Version 4.01 for use on MIT-owned Macintosh and Windows
computers.
We have been working with members of the MIT community to prepare an
installation CD (including the base Dreamweaver 4.0 installer and the
4.01 updater), test new features, and create documentation and stock
answers about the new release.
The Dreamweaver at MIT home page, revised to reflect version 4
changes, is available at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/dreamweaver/.
(Our product release notebook for this release is at
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/dreamweaver/.)
Why Should You Upgrade?
------------------------
IS recommends that users of Dreamweaver upgrade to version 4 if
possible. Version 4 fixes a variety of known bugs from earlier
versions, provides a more effective user interface (the split code
view), and has expanded support for addressing accessibility issues
(via Cascading Style Sheets and the 508 Accessibility extension).
New Features of Note
-----------------------
Dreamweaver 4 provides bug fixes and many new features:
1. New "Code View" offers simultaneous HTML and page layout views
2. O'Reilly documentation is included as a built-in help resource
3. Support now available for external Cascading Style Sheets
4. Enhanced Site/Asset Management tools
5. An expansive set of extensions -- several supported by IS, notably
a "508 Accessibility" extension that can help ensure that pages
created in Dreamweaver meet MIT's Web Accessibility Guidelines
(see the Dreamweaver at MIT home page for how to obtain extensions)
An overview of the new product features is available at
http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/productinfo/newfeatures/,
with a full feature tour at
http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/productinfo/features/.
Security Warning
-------------------
Unfortunately, Dreamweaver 4's file transfer feature still uses an
insecure version of the Internet file transfer protocol (FTP). This
means that your username and password will be sent unprotected (i.e.,
fully visible to hackers) if you try to transfer files over the
network using Dreamweaver's Site View options.
This is an unacceptable security risk to you and the MIT community,
so it is strongly recommended that you NOT use Dreamweaver's built-in
file transfer capability. Instead, you should use a secure method of
file transfer. (See http://web.mit.edu/cwis/secure-xfer/ for secure
techniques.)
Obtaining Dreamweaver 4 Software/Licenses
--------------------------------------------
Dreamweaver is available free of charge to members of the MIT
community for use on MIT-owned machines through a volume license
agreement established by Information Systems. (MIT students are
considered separately. Under the volume agreement, a limited number
of MIT students can obtain a license to use Dreamweaver -- even on
non-MIT machines -- through July 31, 2002.)
To obtain the CD or licenses:
1) Users who obtained Dreamweaver 3 previously under MIT's volume
license were automatically sent the Dreamweaver 4.01 installation CD
via campus mail earlier this week. (Please allow several business
days if you have not received yours.) These users do not need to
obtain new licenses for Dreamweaver 4: the new software is considered
an upgrade under the volume license agreement. (Note that the CD was
sent to whoever requested the original Version 3 CDs, so if you
obtained your copy of Dreamweaver 3 through someone in your
department under our volume license, check with that person again for
your copy of Dreamweaver 4.)
2) Users who do not already have Dreamweaver can either have their
department representative expand their group's license request (the
rep would fill out a Dreamweaver Request form), or they can fill out
the Dreamweaver Request form themselves to make a new request. Select
the appropriate link in the "Obtain Dreamweaver 4 at MIT" section of
the Dreamweaver at MIT home page,
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/dreamweaver/. (Note that the request form
requires MIT certificates.)
3) Users who obtained Dreamweaver 3 or 4 on their own but want to be
included under MIT's volume license should consider themselves new
users and see step 2 above. (There is no provision to "roll over" a
separately-purchased license into the volume license agreement.)
Departmental Representatives who administer the Dreamweaver licenses
in their area are encouraged to review the use of Dreamweaver in
their group at this time. In particular, if licenses are no longer
being used, please report that via the Dreamweaver Request form so we
can re-allocate the licenses to other users. (There are only a
limited number of licenses available under the volume license
agreement.)
Need help?

Enjoy!
