Information Systems (IS) would like to reaffirm that Mozilla under
Linux/UNIX and Internet Explorer under Windows are fully supported web
browsers at MIT, in addition to Netscape versions 6.2.3 and 4.78. As a
supported browser, it is possible to acquire an MIT personal web
certificate and access secure web services, including, Employee Self
Service, SAPweb, WebSIS, etc. Additionally, IS' Software Release team and
website providers, maintainers and developers test these browsers against
their websites for look and feel, stability, page display, javascript
navigation, pull-down menu, etc.
Be Careful of Browsers Storing Passwords
--------------------------------------------------------------
All of the browsers mentioned in this e-mail, have the option of storing
your passwords for various web sites. They make this easy by asking if you
want to save the passwords. This can be useful when accessing a site that
you have paid an annual fee for or is free, such as the NYTimes.com, but
which does not provide data or access to private records. Be very careful
about saving your passwords for sites like WebMail, your bank's web site or
the Fidelity NetBenefits site as these saved passwords could be mis-used to
read your e-mail or steal your money.
Information Systems recommends that you do not store passwords with your
web browser for sites at MIT.
Support Continues for Netscape Navigator/Netscape
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Information Systems continues to support Netscape 6.2.3 and Netscape
Navigator 4.78, with 6.2.3 being the recommended version (support for 4.78
will be discontinued on June 30, 2003). For Macintosh systems, Netscape is
the recommended browser.
On Athena Linux and Athena Solaris platforms, Mozilla 1.0 is supported as a
comparable browser to Netscape Navigator 6. Netscape Navigator 4.78
continues to be supported with a de-support date to be announced in the future.
Some websites work better with Internet Explorer (IE)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a variety of websites on the internet which work best with
Internet Explorer (Macintosh or Windows). IE for Windows is a fully
supported browser and many people can simply just use IE instead of
Netscape. This removes the requirement to download Netscape. However, you
need to be sure that you have IE version 5.5 or later with all security
updates installed. For more information on obtaining security updates for
IE, see <http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/security/>
No support for personal certificates with IE for the Macintosh
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer for the Macintosh does not support personal certificates;
therefore, Netscape remains the only supported browser at MIT for this
platform. We continue to work with our Microsoft and Apple representatives
to demonstrate this unmet requirement.
