Subject: Discontinuing Software/Hardware Support during FY2003
Cc: infosys@mit.edu, itag@mit.edu, swrt@mit.edu
Good Day,
Recently, in an effort to ensure a high level of quality support for the
Macintosh and Windows platforms, Information Systems reviewed the vast
combinations of hardware and software currently being recommended and
supported. Our review suggests that discontinuing support for the
following applications, operating systems and hardware during this fiscal
year is vital to maintain quality support, improve responsiveness to new
vendor releases and make it possible to introduce new product offerings.
Would you please review the following matrix and let us know by Friday,
September 27th if retiring any of the following software and/or hardware
from general support imposes a significant burden to your Department and/or
the client community you support? If significant burdens are apparent, we
are prepared to work with you to help ease the difficulties in migrating to
a more current environment. As a reminder, to support the operating
systems' retirements, Information Systems has negotiated licenses with
Apple and Microsoft.
Software slated for retirement on December 31, 2002:
Application Mac Version Win Version
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fetch 3.0.4b6sec
Netscape 4.6, 4.74 4.6, 4.74

WS-FTP (insecure)* product retired
Operating Systems:

Software slated for retirement on June 30, 2003:

FileMaker Pro 4.x 4.x
Operating Systems:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For members of the Administrative Community relying on the suite of
Enterprise-wide applications, the recommendations for discontinuing
hardware support:
Hardware designated for June 30, 2003 retirement:
Make/Model CPU speeds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Macintosh G3s all cpu speeds
Macintosh G4s cpu w/ cpu speed less than 450MHz
Intel cpu w/ cpu speed less than 500MHz
In closing, we appreciate the Community's assistance and involvement in
Software Release and look forward to your responses by September 27, 2002.
*The 3 products (PageMaker, Plop and WS-FTP) are being retired.
FileZilla, SecureFX and SecureCRT are secure file transfer product
alternatives for Plop and WS-FTP. FileZilla is a supported and recommended
product and support is being prepared for SecureFX and SecureCRT.
Information Systems' Publications team has seen a decline in PageMaker use
on-campus with increasing demand for Quark and InDesign.
Thanks,
Jon
