Good afternoon,

On Monday, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Windows XP. While we do
not expect any problems with SP1, we do recommend that you hold off
applying it until Information Systems and MIT's enterprise wide application
support providers have had a chance to test SP1 in the MIT
environment. Normally, we would plan to have the results of such testing
in about 30 days. Given that there is already a great deal of work
underway regarding phase two support for Windows XP, we plan to have a
recommendation on SP1 at the same time as we announce phase two support
currently targeted for the beginning of November.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 contains a number of changes to Windows XP. A
difference in this service pack from others that contain patches and fixes
is that SP1 makes changes to the operating system to comply with the
Justice Department requirements so that end-users can remove certain
Microsoft applications as part of the operating system, for example
Internet Explorer and Windows Messenger.

For more information on SP1, see Microsoft's press release at:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2002/aug02/08-30WinXPSP1PR.asp

As we go through the process of testing and evaluating SP1 for Windows XP,
we will post updates to the Windows XP Release Notebook at
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/winxp/. This will include a link to our test matrix.

If you have any questions regarding this announcement or the release
process, please contact winxp-release@mit.edu.

Thanks,
Jon
