WINDOWS' WORKSTATION RETIREMENTS @ MIT DURING FY 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------
Target retirement of Windows ME for December, 2002
Target retirement of Windows NT/98 for June, 2003

To support these retirements, we have purchased a large Windows XP
Professional volume license from Microsoft. The license covers Faculty and
Staff with a separate "grant" of licenses for Students. Special thanks to
Microsoft for the generous "grant" and to all the people who assisted with
the negotiations!

Briefly, several critical reasons for the decision to retire Windows
ME/NT/98 are:

- Microsoft us retiring windows NT & 98 in June, 2003
- Our statistics indicate that the use of ME on campus is minimal and NT
usage is decreasing
- We are focusing our efforts on Windows 2000 and XP.
