Good Morning!
Release Effort Underway
------------------------------------
Plop is a limited function secure File Transfer Protocol (FTP) application,
created by MIT developers, specifically designed for MIT users wishing to
transfer files from a Windows NT or Windows 2000 machine to Athena lockers.
While Plop has some limited functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME,
there are significant bugs, which complicate its use on those Operating
Systems. In the interest of a timely release, Information Systems has
decided to move forward with the Plop release for Windows 2000 and NT.
Plop uses Kerberos authentication to enable users to transfer files to
their Athena websites, without exposing their password on the network. A
Plop Product Release team has been convened. The team will finalize the
installer, write documentation, and help ensure that support areas are
ready when the product is released. The goal is to release Plop in April 2001.
Features
-------------
Plop installs a Desktop shortcut, onto which the user drops the files to be
transferred. The default server to which Plop will connect is
FTP.DIALUP.MIT.EDU, and the default directory to which Plop will transfer
the files is the www directory within the home directory of the user. The
user can, however, modify the default to transfer files to a different
server, or to a different directory within the default server. Plop is a
single-directional FTP client, and does not provide any user interface for
transferring files from a remote host to the local host. Plop is not able
to handle the transfer of folders.
Testers Wanted
-----------------------
We will be soliciting testers within the next few weeks, and will send a
separate message with details.
