On February 12th, we sent the first of a series of monthly updates on
the state of Mac OS X support at MIT. The text of that announcement
can be found at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/news.html#xnews.
In the time since our last update, Apple has released its eighth
update - Mac OS X 10.1.3 - to Mac OS X since it shipped last March.
Mac OS X 10.1.3 contains several networking improvements, along with
fixes that improve the stability of the operating system. While these
are welcome changes to Mac OS X, some applications that are currently
working well may not work as expected on 10.1.3. More information on
Mac OS X 10.1.3 is available from
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/news.html#xnews.
Also, the TSM client for the centralized backup service is still not
available for Mac OS X, as we first mentioned in the February update.
In summary, the recommendation for March remains that MIT users
continue with Mac OS 9.x until more IS supported applications are
released and tested, and support tools are in place.
If you need to use your computer for any MIT administrative tasks or
rely on support from Information Systems for the applications you
use, we recommend that you do not transition to Mac OS X at this time.
IS Activities and Updates
-----------------------------------------------
Upcoming activities related to Mac OS X include the following:
Mac OS Quick Start, March 8
12-1pm, N42 demo center
This will include a general overview of Mac OS X in the MIT
environment with a period for questions and answers.
MacPartners meeting, March 18
12-1:30, N42 demo center
See native versions of some of your favorite applications.
Testing Update - The Mac OS X Release Team continues to work with our
IT colleagues at MIT to test Mac OS X. Phase One of formal testing is
to be held from March 7-21 and will focus on the behavior of current
IS supported applications running in Classic (Mac OS 9 running within
X). Testing will also include connecting to MITnet and connecting to
servers. In addition, Mac OS X-native applications currently
undergoing in-depth testing include FileMaker Pro 5.5, Fetch 4.01,
Office v. X, and Netscape 6.2.1. For test results for IS supported
software and applications critical to MIT business, see
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/macosx/matrix.html.
Training Update - Three days of IS support provider training are
scheduled for April 16, 17, and 18 in the Demo Center. We have
engaged a company called MacTrainers to teach the classes. TPS
trainers have reviewed commercial training materials in preparation
for teaching end user Mac OS X classes.
Documentation Update - Documentation is being developed to support
Phase One of testing, and includes instructions for performing a
clean install of the OS, connecting to MITnet, connecting to a server
and setting up a printer.
Self-support Resources
