Folks-
We are going to be making changes to the security-fyi and netusers
lists in January. The plan is to merge the current security-fyi
subscribers into the netusers mailing list. We will also be moving
netusers to a 'mailman' server at that time, in order to defeat the
increasing spam seen recently on local lists.
The reason for the move is to consolidate related information in one
place, and to keep the community better informed about security and
network events. Traditionally, netusers has been the place where the
Network operations group announces planned network outages, as well
as other news that may affect use of the network. We have also sent
CERT security advisories to the netusers list as they are received.
Both these uses will continue.
In addition, after the change we will also be sending local security
advisories to the netusers list. These advisories typically describe
recent threats seen on campus, or similar information relevant to
system administrators and end-users on MITnet.
No action is required on your part, and a note will be sent to the
list when the conversion is complete.
We hope that this change will allow us to better communicate relevant
information in a timely fashion, while protecting subscribers from
spam. Thanks for subscribing.
