From: Jonathan D Reed <jdreed@MIT.EDU> To: "release-announce@mit.edu" <release-announce@MIT.EDU> Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2014 17:02:57 +0000 Message-ID: <F9E77331-7583-4015-BD71-E8EF001E6FAE@mit.edu> Content-Language: en-US Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-ID: <E980F537CE304E4EAFE9FBB71ABB2AFB@exchange.mit.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Errors-To: release-announce-bounces@MIT.EDU Good morning, The Athena Release Team has been hard at work this summer preparing the newest version of Debathena, based on Ubuntu 14.04 (“Trusty"). This version is now available for beta testing. It will be rolled out to 22 workstations throughout campus (19 in the W20-575 cluster, 3 in 56-129, and one Quickstation in W20) over the weekend. Users interested in testing may also install it on their own machines (physical or virtual), though we do not recommend installing it on mission-critical infrastructure at this time. Users who choose to participate in testing should read http://debathena.mit.edu/testing for more information and send their feedback to <testers@mit.edu>. Please note that the PXE (network-based) installed still defaults to Precise, and testers will need to follow the prompts to select ’trusty' as their distribution. Preliminary release notes can be found in the MIT Knowledge Base at: http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/9XIYCQ We will be updating them between now and the release date. The final release is tentatively scheduled for Monday August 11, and another announcement will be sent to this list in advance of the release. As with all Athena releases, a downgrade is not possible without wiping and re-installing the workstation, so users who rely on Athena for their daily work and/or use software not maintained or installed by IS&T (including software installed in course lockers) are strongly encouraged to make use of this period to test their software with the new version to ensure compatibility. If you are receiving this e-mail, but are no longer responsible for Athena workstations or software in your department, lab, or center, please forward this message to your colleagues and encourage them to sign up for this list at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/release-announce Cordially, Jonathan Reed for the Athena Release Team
