Greetings,
I have checked the accounting records and for both IPDS(3160) and
postscript (hp) printers we have the same issue for print jobs that are
"restarted" after a printer or network problem. The accounting log is
going to count ALL the pages printed.
The operators on the IPDS printers will be able to "forward" space through
the print job to approximately where the job left off before the
problem. I have read the documentation and the help file for the operator
GUI and this is only available for the IBM printers (called PSF printers in
the documentation and help file).
I have put this issue on the list for sending to IBM on the accounting issues.
It also raises the question of we do have another option on the postscript
"passthrough" printing. We can use the older driver, that still gives us
accounting records that in testing were accurate, but will not return the
file to the pending state when there is a problem at the printer end. The
print job is lost in case of paper jam, out of paper or network hiccup
during printing.
So it is a rock and a hard place on this one.
We potentially overcharge someone printing to an hp printer for paper jams,
lack of paper or other problem, but they get the output.
We potentially lose print jobs because of problems in the printing, but
still charge the customer for print they did not receive.
