MAINE STANDOFF CONTINUES! KEEP THE PRESSURE ON! July 3rd, 2001

UPDATE FROM THE MAINE BORDER: THE STANDOFF CONTINUES!
'LET CUBA LIVE' ACTIVISTS SAY "WE'RE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL!"
CALL RIGHT AWAY: KEEP THE PRESSURE ON WASHINGTON!

We just received a call from Steve Burke of the Maine-based organization

Let Cuba Live. US Customs officials at the remote Coburn Gore border
checkpoint are still holding two trucks, a trailer, and an assortment of

valuable medical equipment -- including two anaesthesia machines, EKG
machines, cardiac defibrillators, and other heavy hospital equipment --
which they seized and impounded yesterday when Let Cuba Live attempted
to
cross the US border to send this aid to Cuba. The struggle is still at a

standoff: the Customs officers have not yet received clearance
from their superiors to release the aid, and the activists from Let Cuba

Live are determined to stay until the aid is released for shipment to
Cuba. The activists' spirits are strong; Steve said, "We're in this for
the long haul!"

PLEASE KEEP THE PRESSURE ON: THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS ARE CRUCIAL!

CALL THE US TREASURY DEPT'S OFFICE OF FOREIGN ASSETS CONTROL (OFAC):
Richard Newcomb, director: 202/622-2500;
Hal Harmon/Elton Ellison, director/deputy director for OFAC enforcement:

202/622-2430
fax them at 202 622 1657

CALL YOUR CONGRESSPEOPLE'S OFFICES IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE:
202/225-3121 in Washington; also their home district offices
TELL THEM TO RELEASE THIS VALUABLE AND URGENTLY-NEEDED HUMANITARIAN AID
FOR CUBA -- IMMEDIATELY! -- and let them know we'll keep organizing
until the blockade is ended.

NOTE: FILM FOOTAGE FOR MEDIA UPLINKS IS AVAILABLE FROM THE CANADIAN TV
REPORTERS WHO HAVE BEEN COVERING THE COBURN GORE CROSSING: Ask your
local
media to cover this event!
CONTACT: Global News in Montreal(a CNN affiliate) for 7/2 footage:

Let Cuba Live with the Caravane d'Amite Quebec/Cuba, the Quebec Cuba
Friendship Association, and IFCO/Pastors for Peace organized this
challenge
to send donated medical aid by way of Montreal to Cuba. The
confrontation and seizure at the remote Maine crossing yesterday --
which involved 30 law enforcement officers and 40 activists -- was in
stark contrast to the lack of US government confrontation when the 12th
IFCO/Pastors for Peace US/Cuba Friendshipment Caravan crossed from
Hidalgo, Texas into Reynosa, Mexico yesterday with 95 caravanistas, 9
vehicles, and 75 tons of aid. The caravan is traveling today to
Tampico, Mexico, where the aid and vehicles will be loaded onto a cargo
ship destined for Cuba.
KEEP THE PRESSURE ON! call Washington!!!!
