Hi Everyone,

You probably heard the news already: Lori Berenson has been
convicted in the civilian trial under anti-terrorism rules
that made it impossible to have due process. If you can
spare a moment, check out the details and ask your reps to
sign on to Rep. Carolyn Maloney's dear colleague letter to
Peru's President Paniagua.

She is basically to serve another 15 years for sharing
an apartment building with members of the MRTA, who she
claims she did not know were members. She has experienced
double-jeoprady and has been denied the presumption on
innocence until proven guilty. Yes, she is just one
of many many political prisoners in the world (and Turkish
prisoners are in month 9 of a hunger strike), nevertheless,
she was a student here at MIT once and her case raises many
important issues about civil liberties that are just as much
under attack here as in Peru. It can't hurt to learn more
about her struggle and take a small stand against guilt
by unwitting association and guilt by media perception.
And even more so, once our elected officials stand up for
justice and fairness in far away Peru, it will be harder
for them to look the other way when we petition them to
stand up for justice and fairness here in the US.

In hope,
		Aimee
