Friends,
I'll be teaching a non-credit course during IAP entitled "Ethics for
Technology in an Ecological Millennium" which is (unofficially) sponsored
by MIT Student Pugwash.
The course will be based on class discussions, and will involve outside
readings including Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael". We'll try to explore,
question, and strengthen our personal ethical foundations for deciding
whether technologies are "good". We'll be focusing on the future and on
the relationship between humans and nature. We will also have a guest
lecture by environmental writer Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature.
I'll try to make the course fun and only ask that you come with a
willingness to participate and to question your own views.
We will meet 8 times, Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30-5 in room 10-280. The
first meeting is Jan. 9.
The lecture by Bill McKibben is open to the public and will be on Jan. 24
at 12-1:30 in room 4-159, so if you can't take the course, try to make the
lecture.
