About the speaker

Abhay Mehta, trained in Microbiology at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, has dedicated the last five years to the protection of the
public interest in power sector reform in India. He played an instrumental
role in documenting evidence and bringing a civil action against the Enron
project through its development. He is a freelance journalist whose
articles have appeared in Outlook, Financial Express, The Times of
India and other Indian publications.
About the Civil Action against Enron
------------------------------------
The controversial Enron power project, initially approved by the
erstwhile Congress government, was first rejected when the Shiv Sena-BJP
government came to power on the basis of its many fallacies. However, it
was instantly 'revived' following a visit by Rebecca Marc, CEO, Enron to
Bal Thackerey, the Shiv Sena Supremo. In 1994, Abhay Mehta filed a law
suit together with CITU (Center for Indian Trade Unions) against Enron.
He spent about 4 years on the issue till it was put in limbo by the
Supreme Court. The case is still pending.
