Dear friends,
When people were arrested and subjected to mistreatment in the wake of the
IMF/World Bank demostrations in April, Boston-area activists rallied on a
moment's notice and marched in solidarity. The news of this and other
demonstrations made it to the prisoners in Washington, and it was sincerely
touching and sustaining.
The jailed protestors had vast and active support, and it showed. But the 2
million other prisoners in the US, for the most part, do not have networks
behind them, calling for their release and protesting any infringement on
their rights. Many of them, if mistreated, have little recourse. And abuse
within the prison system is widespread.
So I'm writing to let you know about a demonstration at the State House this
Saturday, July 16, at 3:30. It is organized by the Prison Reform Unity
Project, with similar actions in other cities around the US. I'm asking
those working on global economic issues to come out to this demonstration.
Come because prisons are taking the place of vanishing good jobs. Come
because the US has over 2 million people behind bars. Come to oppose the
racism that permeates the legal system. Come because you oppose police
brutality. Come because prisoners are exploited for cheap labor. Come
because the state legislature recently voted to strip felons of their voting
rights while in jail. Come because prison medical care is terrible and death
rates in prison are much higher than in the general population. Come because
everyone has the right to basic human dignity.
