In January of this year Illinois Governor George
Ryan, was forced to concede that Its clear that
the system is broken. and to pass a moratorium on
executions in that state. Since then 5 states other
have proposed legislation with Maryland and New
Hampshire passing them to put a halt to executions.
As recently as last week, the New Hampshire Senate
voted 14-10 to stop the death penalty in that state.
The current U.S. death row population stands at
3,625 inmates. The racism and bias of the criminal
injustice system have taken more and more people into
the streets in recent months. Activists around the
country have been demonstrating demanding a moratorium
on the death penalty. Presidential candidate George
W. Bush who is responsible for the executions of
more than 200 people in Texas alone has been forced
off the stage by death penalty opponents. But Al Gore
is also a supporter of the death penalty and has faced
protests.
What can activists do next to win the fight
against the racist death penalty and ? Come to this
meeting for a discussion of how we can take the gains
we have already made further. All are welcome!
