HELP DEFEND IMMIGRANT RIGHTS with the
NEW ENGLAND IMMIGRANT & DETAINEE RESPONSE NETWORK
With the INS/Homeland Security "special registration" on hold for the
time being, the New England Immigrant & Detainee Response Network
(NEIDRN) is shifting gears from monitoring at the federal building. Our
next project is to determine the extent of detentions in Massachusetts
in the post-9/11 environment, and use the information we gather to
mount a public political campaign to make Americans aware of the racist
attacks against immigrants being waged in their name by the U.S.
government.
To this end, we have developed a survey form that will be brought into
the prisons where immigrants are being detained. We will work closely
with lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) who are conducting
"rights presentations" in the jails to help ensure that detainees are
aware of their legal and civil rights under the U.S. Constitution. We
are soliciting volunteers willing to accompany lawyers to the jails. In
addition, we are asking for help in the public aspects of the campaign
to follow.
Please join us for a meeting with NLG lawyers on Wednesday, June 4, at
6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the offices of the NLG's
National Immigration Project, 14 Beacon Street, Suite 602 (6th Floor),
Boston. The location is near the MBTA Park Street stop on the Red and
Green lines.
