AFRICAN SOCIAL FORUM

Place: Addis Abeba, Ethiopia
Contact: Gurdas, other Indians and interested people ....here goes a little=
=20
bitte related to the World Social Summit in Munbai, India, for next year.

The city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is to host the next World Social=20
Forum, on January 16 to 21, 2003. A diverse array of Indian organizations=20
planned wide-ranging consultations to choose the most suitable date for the=
=20
event, bearing in mind, among other things, the infrastructure requirements.

A consultation last April 9th, attended by around 100 representatives of=20
some 60 organizations, including trade unions, womens organizations, media,=
=20
student and youth organizations, NGOs and individuals, set up a Mumbai=20
Committee for WSF 2004. The Mumbai Committee met again in Mumbai on April=20
12 for detailed discussions and to finalize the roles and responsibilities=
=20
of the groups responsible for the various functions.

The consultation took place right after the meeting of the Indian General=20
Council, held on April 7 and 8. Another meeting was to take place on April=
=20
19-21, between the proposed ! India Organizing Committee and the Mumbai=20
Committee. The proposed agenda included discussion of the format for WSF=20
2004, funding policy, tasks and roles of the Indian Working=20
Committee/Indian Organizing Committee, International Council and WSF=20
Secretariat and convening of an Asia Solidarity Meeting. The meeting also=20
discussed preparing a meeting with the WSF Secretariat (former Brazilian=20
Organizing Committee).

The meetings are open to any organization or individual who has signed the=
=20
letter of affirmation and sent in a financial contribution. A registration=
=20
fee of 150 rupias/per day will be collected from each participant=20
(including those from Mumbai) to cover lunch, tea, meeting expenses and=20
literature.
