Luther King Jr., come pay tribute to the struggle for peace and
justice to which he gave his life with an evening of music,
performance art, and slam poetry weaving together resistance to war,
gender oppression, homophobia, sexual violence, racism, and
xenophobia. The artists are part of the Hen Foundation,
co-coordinated by Jolie Rickman, which was founded to help female
artist/activist reach out to the community and to foster the ideas of
creative non-violent resistance to oppression. Jolie and the artists
of the Hen Foundation have appeared at over 100+ college campuses and
are currently touring the east coast on their SPRING 2003

Workshop Descriptions
"Words As Weapons"
The first workshop of the evening (6-7pm), facilitated by the Mahina
Movement, will focus on strategies of creative resistance. Mahina
Movement is a performance troupe and production theatre company of
four women of color, committed to provoking new ways of experiencing
art, politics, and life. Mahina, taken from the Tongan word for moon
and the Spanish word "to imagine," explores creative means to reframe
our consciousness as individuals and members of a larger
society. Through images, stories, and words, Mahina Movement seeks to
engender new ideas, reshaping possibilities within our social
reality. Bringing the traditional disciplines of painting, sculpture,
and photography out of defined spaces and infusing them with dance,
theatre, music, and spoken word, Mahina implodes categories and puts
art in an active dialogue with more diverse audiences. The recent
focus of their work has been on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq,
issues of police brutality all over the world, as well as the concerns
of women of color surviving within a white male dominated society and
issues of sexual preference and gender identity. All are welcome and
invited to attend.
"Women, Art, and Resistance : Learning How to Support Ourselves Within Our
Prolonged Struggle"
The second workshop (7:15 - 8:30pm), facilitated by Jolie Rickman and
Gina Young, will focus on the power of music, art, poetry, and theater
to challenge oppression as well as on larger strategies for women to
build a community of resistance and support. Jolie Rickman is a
nationally touring feminist singer/songwriter and co-founded of the
Hen Foundation, an organization that seeks to stimulate and develop
the advancement of grassroots activists, progressive social movements,
and artist-activists while prioritizing the leadership and
contribution of women and people of color. Gina Young is a frequent
performer for events that raise awareness of the rights of women and
sexual minorities and has written a semi- autobiographical
music/theater piece produced Off-Off Broadway. This workshop, like
the earlier one, will be free and open to all.

"Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now. I speak as a child
of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam. I speak for those
whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose
culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor of America who are
paying the double price of smashed hopes at home and death and
corruption in Vietnam. I speak as a citizen of the world, for the world
as it stands aghast at the path we have taken. I speak as an American
to the leaders of my own nation. The great initiative in this war is
ours. The initiative to stop it must be ours."
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
