TEACH-IN about
***Perspectives on the Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq***
WHEN: This Thursday, March 13, 7pm
WHERE: 54-100
WHY: Because knowledge is power!
Are the sanctions really killing 5000 children a month? Why did the U.S. block
Iraq from purchasing wheat-milling equipment? How do Iraqi civilians feel
towards America? Did the U.S. intentionally destroy Iraq's access to clean
water? Why does any of this matter if Saddam really is a brutal dictator with
chemical and biological weapons?
For answers to these questions and more, come to a teach-in that will feature
three speakers, each of them uniquely qualified to speak on this subject:
***Dr. Joy Gordon***
Dr. Gordon is a professor of philosophy who has spent the past three
years researching the economic sanctions agains Iraq. She has uncovered
confidential U.N. documents which illustrate how the U.S. has, through the
U.N., repeatedly prevented Iraq from purchasing basic humanitarian goods,
including vital medical and food-processing equipment. In her words, "U.S.
policymakers have effectively turned a program of international governance
into a legitimized act of mass slaughter."
***George Capaccio***
Mr. Capaccio is a storyteller, writer, and activist from Arlington, MA. Working
with the anti-sanctions group Voices in the Wilderness, he has been travelling
to Iraq regularly (and illegally) since 1997 to deliver food and medicine to
the Iraqi people and to bear witness to their suffering.
***Dr. Thomas Nagy***
De. Nagay is a professor at George Washington University, speaks here
as a refugee, a parent, and a concerned citizen. While researching Gulf War
Syndrome, he happened upon declassified Pentagon documents proving that the
U.S. knew exactly what it was doing when it bombed Iraq's water purification
infrastructure during the Gulf War. The resulting lack of clean water has been
implicated in the deaths of 5000 children a month. While Nagy has been named
by the New York Post as "one of the eight professors that hate America," he
responds, "I don't want to burn the flag, I want to wash it."
This will be an exciting and informative event, and we hope to see you there.
