A TALK WITH COLOMBIAN HIGHWAY WORKER AND UNION LEADER

**************
HECTOR GIRALDO
**************

TUESDAY, FEB 25th, 5PM, Room 4-163

*********************************************************************

Four out of every five union leaders killed in the world are Colombian.
Since 1985, 3,800 union leaders have been killed, with 148 labor activists
assasinated in 2002 alone. Responsible for these deaths are the squads of
anti-union right-wing Colombian paramilitaries, closely linked to the
Colombian military which is supplied with billions of U.S. dollars and
military equipment through Plan Colombia. According to a Human Rights
Watch report, "Military and police detachments continue to promote, work
with, support, profit from, and tolerate paramilitary groups, treating
them as a force allied to and compatible with their own."

Mr. Giraldo, whose own life has been seriously threatened by
paramilitaries, is in the U.S. on a one-year asylum through the AFL-CIO
Solidarity Center. He will speak on the violence against trade unionists
in Colombia and the devastating effects of Plan Colombia on the land and
people of his region. He will discuss the proposed Free Trade Area of
the Americas and the effects that privatization of national industries
will have on human and labor rights.
