As many of you know, McDermott Court, the "DOt' of grass in front of the
Green building is going to be removed to put in temporary offices.
Students and Faculty were not informed of this decision and our input was
not
sought. This is another example of the administrationdisregarding the
voices of students. Go out and show your support to save the dot. I
have also written a petition attached below. Please add your name to it
if you agree and pass it on to others. If you are the 50th, 100th, etc.
person to sign, please email it back to parekh@pimms.mit.edu
In solidarity,
Payal

We, the undersigned MIT students, faculty, and staff, call upon you to
prevent the destruction
of McDermott Court for the building of temporary faculty offices.
Furthermore, we demand a voice in decisions that affect student life and
the MIT community..
Currently, this small piece of grass is one of the few, and by far the
most popular, places on the east side of campus, where students and
other members of the community can play
frisbee, lie in the grass, or eat lunch in the sunshine. Without this
small plot of grass, the east side of campus, which is already rather grey
and depressing, will basically be one large expanse of concrete. We
understand the need for temporary offices due to construction, but feel
alternatives should be considered.
We are inflamed that You, the MIT administration, did not seek student
input in this decision and did not even inform of us of the decision.
During our time here, MIT is not just a place for us to learn, but it also
our home. We demand an environment that is conducive for learning. This
means the administration must recognize we are an integral part of the MIT
community and our voices must be heard. In the Report of the President For
the Academic Year 1998-99, President Vest stated ''Colleges and
universities teach by their actions as well as through their curricula.
Faculties and administrations alike owe it to their students to visibly
deal with important discussions and decisions in a way that displays a
conscious effort to act responsibly, morally and ethically. Much of the
lesson will be contained in what we choose to think about, to do, and not
to do. We owe our students open discussion, serious consideration of
various points of view, and clear explanations of decisions made.'' We ask
You, the MIT administration, to keep your word.
