Sen. Kennedy to be Keynote Speaker at Armenian Genocide Commemoration Event
BOSTON--Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D?MA) will be the keynote address
speaker in honor of the Armenian Genocide 85th Anniversary
Commemoration at Trinity Church on April 24.
The commemoration event, sponsored by the Armenian Genocide 85th
Anniversary Commemoration Committee of Massachusetts, will feature a
special interfaith ecumenical church service at Trinity Church, 206
Clarendon Street, Boston. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30
pm.
The memorial service will be jointly performed by pastors and
congregations of all Armenian church denominations in Massachusetts as
well as ecumenical leaders and other communions, including the
Archdiocese of Boston, Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, and the
Greek Orthodox Diocese of Boston.
Sen. Kennedy will also be joined by Henry Morgenthau III, grandson of
the United States ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian
Genocide.
The church service will be immediately followed by a public rally on
Copley Square at the Armenian Genocide Memorial, which will stand from
April 23 to April 27.
Copley Square will also be the site of a 24-hour long commemorative
vigil. The vigil will begin at 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 23 and end at
6:00 pm on Monday, April 24. The program will feature poetry and prose
readings, music performances, and candle-lighting ceremonies to
commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
On April 24, 1915, the Turkish government, under the Young Turk
regime, launched a campaign of mass extermination against the Armenian
people, claiming the lives of over 1.5 million victims. This year
marks the 85th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
