i concede that temporaries are necessary for all the construction projects
going on campus, but in the open grass area? and without any community
input? *poof* there it is...

Hey People.

I don't appologize for the spam, becuase I think this is important.
MIT is digging up Mc Dermott court (outside the green biulding), to
put in "temporary" office buildings.

I was planning on biulding my 007 machine on Monday, but will be
protesting this instead. They break ground at 8am.

This is about our quality of life, which I feel is less and less of a
concern for MIT. It means alot to me to try to hold on to this bit of
beauty on our campus.

Hope to see you all there.

Zia

Subject: PROTEST on MONDAY at MIT. Please help out!

On Monday, April 24th, the grass circle known as McDermott Court "Dot", located
between the Green Building and Building 18, will be uprooted so that MIT can
build 3 year "temporary" faculty offices. This decision was made by the
administration without any student input. Currently, this small piece of grass
is the only place on the east side of campus where students can play frisbee,
lie in the grass, or eat lunch in the sunshine. Without this small plot of
grass, the east side of campus, which is already rather grey and depressing,
will basically be one large expanse of concrete. Being that student morale on
campus is already at an all-time low and MIT students are really starting to
feel that the administration is becoming actively anti-student, this decision
only makes student life worse.

Harvard would never put up temporary faculty offices in the middle of Harvard
Yard. I cannot think of another college besides MIT which would have the nerve
to do this. This is yet another decision by the administration which should
make you angry, so angry that you will join us in protesting it. At 8 am on
Monday, April 24th, we will meet in front of the Green Building and begin the
protest. Please take a small amount of time out of your day to show up anytime
during Monday morning or early afternoon--the earlier, the better. We will have
signs, costumes, and many students on hand. If you would like to help make
signs or be involved with this project at a deeper level, please send me email
at gdayal@mit.edu.

It is my belief that it would serve the MIT community better to hold onto one
of the few organic spaces we have. Their idea of "communicating" this decision
to the student body, as you will read in the email below, is to write an
article about the construction in "Tech Talk" on Thursday after the soil has
already been removed. This is absolutely infuriating. MIT must realize that
they are running a university, not a corporation.

To sum up: This Monday. In the morning. At the McDermott Dot. Be there. For
further details, please don't hesitate to email me.

Sincerely,
Geeta Dayal '01

P.S. Please read the email that follows this, from Ruth Davis, Communications
Manager at the Department of Facilities. This email was not made public to the
MIT community at large.
